A recent study conducted by the Bucharest Community Foundation through the ‘Bucurestiul Pregatit’ program indicates that 82% of Bucharest residents believe the city is not ready for a major earthquake. This concern is particularly significant given the city’s history with seismic activity, notably the devastating 1977 earthquake.
The study also highlights that 59% of residents consider earthquakes a major threat, ranking them as the second biggest reason for concern after personal health issues. Despite this, nearly half of the respondents (45%) have not taken protective measures, and only 15% have developed an action plan in case of an earthquake.
These findings underscore the urgent need for both municipal authorities and residents to prioritize earthquake preparedness. Enhancing building infrastructure, conducting regular safety drills, and increasing public awareness campaigns are essential steps toward mitigating potential risks associated with future seismic events.
